Home Broadband VS Business Broadband

Having a reliable business broadband connection has become as vital to the success of small businesses as having dependable staff or a solid business plan. The differences between home and a dedicated business broadband can be unclear and at times confusing, so we’ve highlighted the key benefits for you below:

1

Business Telecoms Specific Support

If your broadband goes down at home it can feel like you've been sent back to the Stone Age! However as a business the concern is real as it could result in lost revenue or even worse, a damaged reputation! For that reason, business broadband will usually involve round the clock support which has been specifically set up to cater for the unique deadlines and needs of businesses. Response times to issues are much quicker and some providers even have SLAs (guarantee of service) as they understand that many businesses rely on their broadband for the day to day running of the business.

2

Contention Ratio

One of the clearest differences between home and business broadband but is also one that is often overlooked. Contention ratio is the number of users who are sharing the same server, simply put  more users = slower speeds. For example on a home network there can be as many as 50 people using the same server as you (contention ratio 50:1), which would result in a slower speed especially at peak times! Business networks will usually limit the number of connections to 20 on the same server (contention ratio 20:1), a lower contention ratio means a faster more consistent connection at the times when you need it most.

Range of Business Telecom Services

There are some things that you just cannot do with a home broadband package, some of these could be vital to the running of your business. This could include running your own email/web servers, secure access to work, remote networks or accessing your own PC from anywhere in the world. All of these would require a static IP address which are often provided free or very cheaply (Around £2-£5 a month) with a business broadband package. If you require more information about any of the above please give us a call on 0161 503 0724.

4

Security

In the wake of the recent ransomware attacks, data security is more important now than ever. As a home user if your computer is hacked it can result in a lot of headaches, but for a business it would be a disaster not only for your business but for your valued clients as well. Business broadband packages come equipped with higher grade security software to protect your network, so cyber security isn’t something you have to worry about.
